The knee is a complex joint that we often take for granted until we can't use it. This joint is comprised of various types of tissues such as bone, tendon, ligament, and cartilage. The knee is involved in all day to day activities which make it such an effective joint; also, there is a lot that can go wrong, making the knee vulnerable.
One of the most common diseases of the knee is osteoarthritis. In this disease process, the cartilage in the joint slowly degrades away, sometimes leading to just bone rubbing against bone. If you have this, you know this process to be incredibly painful and affects your day to day activities.
While osteoarthritis is typically a chronic disease that gradually takes away full function of the knee, an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury is acute, meaning it happens suddenly in conditions where one can almost always often feel the effects on the knee immediately. Injuries such as this can be caused by sudden twisting motions, often obtained through sports, and most often affect the ability to walk and may even require surgery. While invasive procedures might be warranted, there are alternative options that can be considered and further discussed with one’s doctor to help make the best decision. Alternative therapies can be especially helpful in the recovery phase where your body is healing itself.
Stem cell therapy is a treatment and healing modality where stems cells are procured from your body and injected at a site of injury or pain. Because stem cells differentiate into many different cell types, they aide in the repair of the area of injury or concern which can lead to decreased pain.
